Towson University (TU) is one of the nation’s top 100 public universities. Located north of Baltimore, TU currently enrolls over 19,000 students and is the second-largest university in the prestigious University System of Maryland. The Network Administrator is responsible for the daily operation of the campus data network which includes, but is not limited to, the installation of new equipment, configuration of new equipment, troubleshooting connectivity problems, and managing the network engineering ticket queue. The Network Administrator will also participate in projects. The Network Administrator focuses on the maintenance, configuration, and operation of access layer network electronics. The Network Administrator's routine daily activities are focused on processing network service requests for field work but may also assist the telecom team with cable installation and/or repair as needed.
Telework may be available for this position up to two days per week following the completion of 90 days of service in good standing.
Responsibilities and Duties
Documentation
The Network Administrator is responsible for documenting the resolution to service requests in TechHelp. He must also ensure that the network database is always correct, remove old entries, and ensure new devices appear in the network management systems.
Operations and Maintenance
The Network Administrator is responsible for the maintenance of software, configurations, and access layer hardware, and for carrying out routine client-side field work. This includes updating switch port VLAN assignments, performing restores from backups, and applying standard configuration templates.
Capacity Planning
The Network Administrator is responsible for keeping track of the number of free ports in each of the hub rooms. As new drops are added and ports are used, he must report these changes to the Manager of Network Engineering and recommend, based on trends, when we should anticipate increasing capacity.
Troubleshooting
The Network Administrator is responsible for troubleshooting issues reported via the techhelp system and issues identified by the fault management systems. This includes determining the root cause of access layer network failures, which includes such things as switch hardware failure, electrical failure, UPS malfunctioning, etc. For more complex issues, the Network Administrator should report the issue to a manager or Network Engineer and work with them as directed.
Professional Development
The Network Administrator must keep current with new data network technologies. The Network Administrator should keep track of developments in access layer electronics and trends for managing data networks and configuring network switches. The Network Administrator should pay particular attention to the area of network monitoring, security, and methods of using existing hardware and software to improve security.
Qualifications and Skills
Bachelor's degree and two years of experience.
Experience and success with enterprise-level LAN configuration, troubleshooting and management.
Proven ability to install and configure Cisco switches.
Technical knowledge of network monitoring platforms such as Solarwinds Network Performance Manager.
Understanding of DNS, DHCP, IPAM and NTP.
Technical knowledge of network systems, protocols, and standards such as: TCP/IP, VTP, STP, VLANs.
Ability to manage Cisco networking configurations.
Proven experience of network hardware and software troubleshooting.
Salary and Benefits
Targeted salary range of $77,000-$82,000 annually and full University benefits that include 22 days of annual leave, up to 15 holidays, personal and sick days; excellent health, life, and retirement plans; and tuition remission.
