Virginia Tech seeks a collaborative leader with experience helping institutions implement and optimize the foundational technology platforms that enable academic and administrative operations. The Associate Vice President (AVP) for Enterprise Solutions & Enabling Technologies (ESET) is responsible for a newly formed team within the Division of Information Technology focused on creating and leading an enterprise application and systems environment that enables the university’s strategic goals and prioritizes the work of the Division of Information Technology.
Virginia Tech is in the midst of implementing a comprehensive IT transformation and modernization of its core ERP and data systems. It is renewing its technology strategies and strengthening partnerships between the University’s Division of Information Technology and decentralized IT groups. As a member of the Vice President for IT & CIO's leadership team, the AVP for ESET leads the development, delivery and support of all enterprise and academic applications—including process transformation—in the support of teaching, learning, research and administrative needs of Virginia Tech.
Leadership Agenda
The Associate Vice President leads the technology strategy for university’s Enterprise Resource Planning systems (ERPs), the learning management ecosystem, service management tools, software development, integration services to connect disparate systems, database administration, data warehousing, business intelligence (reporting and analytics), and other enterprise-wide applications (both on-premise and cloud based). The AVP contributes to the goals, objectives and key results of the university IT Strategic Plan and manages ESET team and resources to achieve goals, objectives and key results. Key priorities for the AVP include:
Structure the ESET organization, develop its culture and support the development of its staff.
Build strong and collaborative partnerships with key stakeholders across the university.
Create an enterprise applications roadmap that leverages modern design principles and technologies and effectively meets both current and future university needs.
Support the on-going migration of Virginia Tech’s student information system to the cloud.
Collaboratively develop a strategy for the future of finance, human resources, research administration and other major enterprise platform technologies.
Upgrade the University’s data and reporting technologies to improve data integrations and access.
Support the broader adoption of the University’s service management platform.
Develop the capabilities and services to enable business process transformation.
Position Responsibilities
The Associate Vice President for Enterprise Solutions & Enabling Technologies will work collaboratively with university partners and key stakeholders to understand their needs and deliver an enterprise ecosystem that is user-centered, seamless, and connected; develop a deep technical understanding of the entire enterprise systems and solutions environment; and ensure cohesiveness, resiliency, redundancy, and reliability. They will lead a department that:
fosters high-performing and agile teams dedicated to technical excellence and exceptional customer service, and fluid customer experiences
adopts modern and forward-looking technology and service strategies structured around common technology layers and consistent service delivery through standard processes, and
thoughtfully and collaboratively explores opportunities to drive and improve universities efficiencies (technological, financial, and human) by leverage scale and other strategies as appropriate.
As a member of the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) senior leadership team, the Associate Vice President for Enabling Technologies & Enterprise Systems collaborates with other senior leaders to plan, execute and manage IT projects, programs and services. The AVP will help lead the division in supporting Virginia Tech’s strategic priorities while living our motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve). The AVP will represent DoIT on university committees and working groups as assigned. The AVP is expected to work with the VPIT & CIO, DoIT senior leaders, and institutional leaders to drive cultural and technological transformation within DoIT and the university as well as promote a collaborative, human-centered, innovative, accountable, transparent, and inclusive culture within the IT organization.

Master’s degree or bachelor's degree plus training and work experience that equates to a master's degree.
Significant relevant experience in enterprise application management/support, enterprise architecture, data warehousing, and/or business analysis.
Possess a track record of success directing large and complex IT development and operations teams
Experience in a senior management role, with proven leadership skills and demonstrated ability to manage high-performing teams, operations, and budgets.
Demonstrated ability to think strategically about the application of technology to solve business problems, assess technologies and standards to determine best fit, and develop user/functional/business-driven technology strategies and plans.
Commitment to continuous assessment and improvement with experience identifying, establishing, and reporting on key performance metrics.
Experience leading organizational and/or technology change initiatives with a strong emphasis on relationship-building, collaboration, and shared stewardship.
Strong written and oral communication skills (including ability to present ideas in user-friendly, business-friendly and technical language) and interpersonal skills with a focus on rapport-building, listening and questioning skills.
Ability to build effective relationships and strong commitment to working collegially and collaboratively with constituents at all levels in a diverse and distributed environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with budgeting, financial planning, and business operations.
Understanding of software lifecycle and application development processes.
Experience with business process analysis, including process mapping and re-engineering.
Experience in a large and complex IT environment in higher education.
Familiarity with enterprise application support, database management, application development, data warehousing, and/or application integration.
Understanding of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and/or robotics process automation (RPA) as they apply to enterprise application systems and services.
Possess a visionary mindset to see technology possibilities that others may not.
