Department Description: ITS Infrastructure & Operations (I&O) manages the ITS data centers and provides around-the-clock support for ITS business computing activities. I&O also supports and maintains the infrastructure for network, data communications transport services, and campus desktop computers, and maintains the infrastructure for the operating systems for non-research ITS servers and for disaster recovery and business continuity activities for ITS. I&O also manages the enterprise-wide IT Service Management platform ServiceNow.

Position Description: Join the Networking Group at UNC Chapel Hill, where we are entrusted with the vital task of maintaining robust internet connectivity and data communication for one of the largest networks in the United States. Our network boasts an impressive infrastructure, comprising over 3,000 switches and nearly 12,000 access points.
We are currently seeking a dedicated Networking Analyst to fill a key role on our Network Deployment team. This position places a strong emphasis on delivering exceptional customer service, encompassing the resolution of customer connectivity issues, along with the installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of networking equipment, software, and hardware. As a Networking Analyst, you will report directly to the Manager of Networking Deployment.
Your responsibilities will include collaborating with a dynamic team of network analysts to address day-to-day assignments related to the upkeep and expansion of our extensive campus data network. Your role will involve both hands-on technical tasks, such as setting up and maintaining equipment, as well as analytical duties focused on troubleshooting data networking electronics and associated equipment.
The Network Deployment group is one component of our larger department, which also encompasses Network Engineering and Network Architecture, creating a diverse and collaborative work environment.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
* Demonstrated experience with networking technologies / data communications * Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships in a team environment * Candidate will have excellent oral and written communications and customer service skills
Preferred Qualifications:
* Advanced layer 1 knowledge which will include cabling and fiber installation standards, troubleshooting, experience with a fiber meter/scope, familiarity with connector type * Significant layer 2 knowledge including STP, LACP, LLDP, MLAG, MVRP, 802.1q * Familiarity with PoE standards including 802.3af, 802.3at, 802.3b * Working experience with Extreme, Cisco, Aruba and Arista network operating systems * Understanding of TCP/IP * Experience with network gear life cycling (planning and execution) * Experience in switch configuration templating * Experience with data capture and analysis (Wireshark preferred) * Experience in Data Center networking (high speed PHY and fully meshed configurations) * Experience in 802.11 wireless technology
Qualifications and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Computer Engineering, Electronics, or related technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution; or a - Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of networking related experience such as network design, analysis or network management; or - Associate’s degree in Electronics or Networking Technology and one year of networking related experience: or an equivalent combination of education and experience. - Journey level requires an additional one year of experience. - Advanced level requires an additional two years of experience.
Special Physical and Mental Requirements: Must be able to lift or move up to 60 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation, and ascend/descend ladders. Must have or be able to obtain a valid NC Driver’s License, as the duties require driving a State vehicle.
