The University of Virginia (UVA) seeks a dynamic and collaborative leader to serve as its Associate Vice President for Research Computing (AVPRC). Located in Charlottesville, UVA is a Carnegie Research 1 public university that is committed to significantly increasing the research portfolio across the institution. Reporting to the Vice President and Chief Information Officer, the AVPRC is a critical role and will work closely with university leadership including the Provost, Vice President for Research, the Chief Information & Technology Officer for UVA Health, and deans of research-intensive schools. The AVPRC will serve as the chief evangelist for research computing at UVA and will be responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership, and the implementation of the systems and infrastructure, whether onsite or elsewhere, that drives and supports the research agenda. They will forge relationships with researchers across the university to provide a range of support services that enable and advance the research enterprise.
The AVPRC will work with constituents to identify key trends in resource needs and partner with the information technology team to develop innovative solutions that address emerging or highly specialized needs and maximize the ability of faculty to perform their research and delivery of mission critical analysis. The AVPRC will seek to optimize research computing resources including high-performance computing (HPC) and data storage, configured in an appropriate mix of on premise and cloud-based forms, to provide robust computing capabilities for all areas of scholarship at UVA. The successful candidate will evolve and advance an efficient and effective funding and operating model for research computing in concert with UVA ITS and with key partners across the academic community. In addition, the AVPRC will oversee the development of the new Data Analytics Center with an anticipated staff of 10 new hires.
The ideal candidate will have deep experience leading research computing, a proven track record of collaboration and faculty partnerships, and the ability to be an effective and persuasive leader with experience securing grant funding. They will articulate a vision that enables computing and storage capabilities available to researchers at UVA and beyond. The successful candidate will lead and shape a compelling integrated service offering for the research community.
