Instructional Support Specialist
The position of Instructional Support Specialist (S170A-18-414) supports and promotes the effective use of instructional technology in higher education, administers the Learning Management System (LMS), and develops, implements, and evaluates instructional technology training for faculty and staff. This position is under the direction of the Manager of Instructional Media and Design Center (IMDC).
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Primary Responsibilities Assists faculty in the selection, development and use of technology to enhance teaching and learning in both traditional and distance learning environments.
· Provides technical expertise to advise and assist faculty in the use of instructional technology to enhance instruction and to create new learning environments.
· Assists faculty in defining appropriate instructional strategies in the preparation of course design.
· Assists faculty to develop courseware that are functional, intuitive, informative and consistent with sound instructional design principles.
· Evaluates locally developed courseware and the implementation of technology in the classroom. Recommends improvements when appropriate.
· Provides consulting, technical assistance and training to faculty working on instructional technology projects, e.g., uses of digital audio and video, interactive tutorials, authoring tools, course management, web resource site development and online assessment tools.
· Administers instructional technology tools such as learning management systems, authoring and multimedia graphics tools.
· Evaluates and tests technology products and applications associated with instruction. Recommends solutions that meet university or departmental instructional goals.
· Provides coordination and leadership on special projects involving the implementation of new instructional technology.
· Works collaboratively with the Director of Distance Education to increase online course offerings, conform to distance education regulations, and ensure quality offerings
Promotes the benefits of and encourages the integration of pedagogy and technology
· Develops relationships with academic departments and faculty to advance the integration of technology in instruction.
· Works with staff to integrate academic technology tools into existing computing infrastructure or to identify needed upgrades to facilities and systems.
· Keeps current on knowledge of instructional technology field and communicates the latest developments to faculty members.
Conducts faculty workshops and demonstrates products and methodologies to advance the use of technology for instructional purposes.
· Provides faculty training on instructional technologies such as Web-based course management tools, authoring tools, and graphics and presentation software. Provides one on one support when appropriate.
· Assists and coordinates programs and workshops with faculty sponsored organizations such as the Teaching and Learning Enhancement (TALE) Center.
· Develops web-based information resources which enable faculty and students to use instructional technology successfully.
· Collaborates with the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education's Center for Distance Education to incorporate system-wide training and web-based information resources with local efforts. Informs faculty of system-wide resources available to them.
Performs Managerial Duties
· Manages IMDC Help Desk, including hiring, scheduling, evaluating, and managing IMDC student worker staff; providing resources and technical advice; providing instructional advice; resolving problems; communicating changes in technology tools and systems to end users via published written and video communications.
· Monitors the student worker budget to ensure budget will cover staffing for academic year
· Schedules staff to meet coverage and budget requirements
· Inventories IMDC equipment and completes checks and balance practices to ensure accuracy
· Monitors all end user support requests related to instructional technology and steps in as needed to provide assistance to IMDC staff to diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve technical support issues.
· Thoroughly researches changes in software and services and makes recommendations that benefit teaching and learning.
· Assists with change management and notifies appropriate parties of changes where necessary.
QUALIFYING EXPERIENCE / EDUCATION:
Minimum Experience and Training Bachelor’s degree and two years relevant work experience.
Preferred Experience and Training
Master's degree in Instructional Technology/Design or related field.
Instructional technology support experience in a higher education environment
Experience in teaching and knowledge of pedagogy
Experience with learning management systems.
Experience supporting or developing distance learning environments.
Experience with web-based course management tools, authoring tools and various presentation software.
Demonstrated ability to work with and support faculty, staff and students of a diverse background.
Demonstrated ability to conduct various methods of training workshops.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and screen capturing software.
