Iowa State University is seeking applicants for a Network Architect. This position works within a team of network architects responsible for designing, implementing, and securing the university’s data network. Iowa State University’s Network Architecture team defines and provides all manner of architectural elements, building blocks and technologies that allow the university’s production network infrastructure to meet the needs of our users.
A successful candidate must have a track record of understanding technology and security and be familiar with trends and how they can be applied in a higher education setting. Duties include designing a robust and secure network framework for providing Internet service, defining IP network architecture, peering edge and backbone networks, and data center networking to meet the needs of Iowa State University.
This position requires an in depth understanding of routing protocols, data center technologies, firewall technologies, and the ability to design secure large scale networks to ensure proper availability and performance. This position is responsible for effectively documenting and communicating architectural guidelines through documented standards.
This position may be filled at a senior or level III. In addition to the responsibilities noted above, the senior level position will also work as a team lead on projects, mentor staff, and direct the work of colleagues. A senior level position will also provide strategies and technology roadmaps for building networks that will meet the service-level objectives.
ITS provides core computing, network services, enterprise systems, and information security resources to the students, faculty, and staff of Iowa State. ITS partners with IT professionals from around campus to provide more specialized IT resources to ISU’s academic and business units.
The successful candidate will be detail oriented, self-motivated, possess excellent communication skills, and have the ability to troubleshoot while learning new skills, tools, and technologies. Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 2 years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, MIS, or IT-related degree. Experience with Cisco routing and switching technologies. Demonstrated experience and extensive knowledge of dynamic routing protocols, including EIGRP, OSPF, and BGP. Demonstrated experience with campus and ISP technologies and design. Demonstrated experience with data center technologies and design. Demonstrated experience with MPLS technologies and network segmentation concepts. Familiarity with Cisco Nexus and ASR product lines, F5, and Gigamon hardware platforms.
