Working within the University Technology Office (UTO) as a collaborative leader within the Operations and Digital Transformation team, reporting to the Chief Operating & Digital Transformation Officer, the Executive Director of Cloud and Advanced Network Engineering Services performs work with broad management and operational responsibilities of considerable difficulty and sensitivity in planning, organizing, and coordinating technical, administrative and operational activities of the department. This position will be required to lead, coach, and advance the work of approximately 85+ department staff and oversight of department budget. The Executive Director will oversee the day to day operations of the Cloud and Advanced Network Engineering Services team (CANES), while working to develop best practices, elevate operational excellence and help the team align with the UTO mission, core values and aspirations. The individual in this role will be expected to work collaboratively with all levels of leadership and promote a healthy work environment that fosters positive team alignment within the Operations and Digital Transformation (ODT) team and the broader UTO. The Executive Director will consistently demonstrate that they can relate to the engineering staff, inspire them, build trust, and motivate them in a direction consistent with the leadership culture within ODT and UTO. The Executive Director will be passionate about operational excellence and help to build a culture of transparency and commitment to the UTO vision and goals.
Oversees the day-to-day operations of the CANES team within UTO.
Provides recommendations to Senior UTO leadership for operational improvements and best practices.
Develops long- and short-range departmental goals to align UTO’s Positive Core Values with overall goals of University.
Continuously builds strong partnerships with peers in the ODT team to help foster a team culture.
Maintains leadership transparency with UTO Senior Executives to help ensure the operational goals within CANES are supported and aligned with the rest of UTO.
Establish regular touch points with key University partners within research computing to help drive efficiencies to expand our research computing capacity.
Plans, directs and reviews the daily activities and operations of Public and Private Cloud offerings, Data Center Operations, Enterprise Services and ASU’s Network Services in alignment with ASU reference architecture.
Provide consistent collaborative leadership with senior executives to help drive goals and objectives that will improve operational efficiencies.
Participates in the development and recommendation of the operational direction for the department to meet the University mission.
Develops a core set of well-defined enterprise platform products to be incorporated into front-facing services for the ASU community.
Maintain and foster the Positive Core Values outlined by the UTO.
Identifies issues which may impact the operations of the department, takes appropriate steps to resolve problems affecting the department, and recommends measures to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the department.
Partners with university officials, program directors, budget administrators, external advisory boards and/or staff to make determinations for operational improvements, team alignment and long term planning.
Interprets and applies pertinent rules, regulations, policies and procedures set forth by the university or other governing agencies.
Supervises directly and through subordinate supervisors all department staff.
Represents University Technology Office and serves on various department and university committees.
May serve as representative of the University at state, regional and national organizations, boards, councils, and committees as assigned.
Directs and oversees the development and evaluation of department programs.
Manages the design, development and coordination of projects.
Prepares complex reports, documents, and correspondence.
Masters degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment, and eight (8) years of related administrative experience which includes five (5) years of supervisory experience; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
Experience in higher education institution.
Experience with Private and Public Cloud, IoT, Network Design, and Analytics.
Experience in effectively managing, supervising and evaluating assigned staff.
Experience in providing leadership in a collaborative environment.
Experience with budget management.
Demonstrated knowledge of university procurement practices.
Demonstrated knowledge of management principles and practices.
Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of higher education.
Demonstrated knowledge of accounting and budgeting principles and practices.
Demonstrated knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to human resource management. Knowledge of state. and federal laws pertaining to academic personnel policy and procedures.
Demonstrated knowledge of internal university policies and procedures.
Experience in problem-solving and decision making.
Demonstrated knowledge of budget preparation and forecasting.
Experience in coordinating activities and establishing priorities.
Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Evidence of effective verbal and written communication.
Use PC and use hand/fingers for repetitive motion (keyboarding/typing) Sit or stand for extended periods of time and walk moderate distances to perform work Communicate both orally and in writing, and read/interpret written and oral instructions/directions May require lifting of items weighing up to 40 pounds
