Create and lead new unit, formulating unit mission and enacting established strategic plan priorities in consultation with the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Innovation.
Serve as the campus liaison to the System Office for Institutional Technology and Office of Institutional Research, representing the UMR campus on relevant endeavors and communicating relevant information from the System to the campus.
Support daily activities of the technology support staff, in collaboration with their System OIT supervisor who visits campus weekly.
Manage team members’ work assignments, engagement with one another, and contribution to the broader vision of the campus.
Manage unit budget.
40% Support of Campus Assessment Plan and Learning Analytics for Faculty Research
Build collaborative relationships, listening to discern appropriate support for the campus Vision and the Grounding Value of “evidence based decision making.”
In a collaborative, innovative environment, interact with, influence, and serve senior leaders, faculty, and staff with written summaries and/or presentations on assigned projects.
Manage and enhance the data warehouse and its functionality, working closely with the relevant faculty task force and its director.
Support academic technologist and programmers to advance the unit mission, working closely with System colleagues assigned to supervise other members of the Data Tech team.
Engage with faculty and the Vice Chancellor to determine data and technology support needed to advance the campus Vision and enact the Grounding Value of “Evidence-Based Decision Making”.
30% Campus Data Collection and Management
Drive and support the answering of key campus questions by developing research methodology, gathering data and/or using appropriate statistical techniques on available data.
Communicate with faculty to support their learning research, working to develop understanding of key learning questions, solve problems, and explore the data from multiple angles.
Drive collection of new data and the refinement of existing data sources; apply appropriate programming and/or computational techniques to accomplish this work.
Analyze the problem, question existing processes and assumptions, gather data and information, find and evaluate alternative solutions, and propose best course of action.
Communicate, convey, and visualize informed conclusions and recommendations across an organization’s leadership structure in a manner to “tell the story” behind the data and influence how organization approaches the challenge.
May delineate the information to be gathered, collect data at the project inception, prescribe how to structure the data, and specify the data warehousing structure for future access.
Through data, may predict what actions will be taken in a designated time frame for a prescribed issue/challenge.
Collaborate with other components of the University of Minnesota System to gather data. Proactively seek and locate data, including outside benchmarks or comparative data, to support or refute proposed decisions.
Other duties may also be assigned by the Vice Chancellor.
Education & Experience
BS in information systems, computer science, informatics, applied statistics, learning sciences, educational/instructional technology, or similar before the starting date of the position.
Four years professional information technology experience including supervisory experience.
Experience working with relational database management systems and models
Experience in educational data mining and/or learning analytics
At least one year of management or leadership experience of a team.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Proficiency in manipulating and analyzing complex, high-volume, high-dimensionality data from varying sources.
Extensive experience in and strong passion for empirical research and answering hard questions with data.
Interpersonal, presentational, and written communication skills to positively convey findings, coordinate team activities, and influence senior leadership & faculty.
Demonstrated experience querying, processing, analyzing, and reporting on large data sets.
Ability to use data retrieval and manipulation tools in conjunction with visual data tools to present data clearly to non-technical audiences.
Familiarity and experience with intermediate statistical methods; advanced proficiency with statistical tools.
Ability to tell stories with data using data visualization software such as Tableau, Excel, Stata, or similar software in conjunction with strong verbal ability.
Flexible analytical approach allowing for results at varying levels of precision.
Familiarity with strategic planning concepts.
Excellent project management skills.

MS degree in related field.
