The Rockefeller University, a leading biomedical research university, is recruiting a forward-looking Senior Network Engineer (SNE) to serve as the lead architect for the design and implementation of a new, cutting-edge network infrastructure. A major network refresh is underway in order to support and accelerate the increasingly data-intensive research conducted by the university.
As part of the Information Technology (IT) Department, the mission of the Network Group is to provide premier communication services to the entire Rockefeller University community, consisting of over 80 labs and over 1,800 employees. This academic and research population is supported by a distributed enterprise data network made up of over 10,000 network ports, 500 wireless access points, over 22,000 unique devices, and approximately 500 IP phones and 1,000 digital phone lines. We provide data, wireless, security, analog and digital telephony, cable TV, converged services such as IP Telephony and IP Video, and are responsible for designing, maintaining, and supporting this infrastructure and all associated components.
Position Description: Since the University is in the beginning stages of a comprehensive network core, building distribution, and data center network refresh, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to profoundly influence the university network services delivery methods, security standards, monitoring services, and SDN futures.
The SNE’s primary responsibility is to work closely with the Network Services Manager to design, install, and configure core and edge routers and backbone, data center, and access switches, configure and troubleshoot routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, MPLS, VXLAN with BGP EVPN, Multicast, etc.), and interface with ISPs that provide Internet and WAN access. He or she will also maintain the integrity of the DNS/DHCP systems and VPN concentrators, as well as device status and network throughput monitoring systems. Firewall maintenance and configuration will be a shared responsibility with the Information Security team within the IT Department. The SNE also serves as the deputy Network Services Manager, as needed, and mentors and trains other Network Group personnel, establishing thorough cross-training programs.
