Specific to the Information Security Specialist role, the ASU Information Security Office is seeking a highly dedicated and self-directed individual to join our team and assist with the efforts to protect the universities’ people, systems, and information. This position is involved in a wide variety of security-related projects and topics, including: incident handling and response; security awareness training; policy guidance and review; risk review and management; and proactive security control suggestions and threat hunting. A successful candidate will be a continuous learner to keep pace with a rapidly changing threat landscape, and will be provided with ample opportunities for both on-the-job and instructional training.
Reports to: Senior Information Security Specialist.
Depends on experience
Monitors enterprise-level systems for information security concerns and incidents. Performs incident handling and response, including network, data, and system-level investigation, response, and forensics.
Examines the current processes and procedures used to manage data; looks for areas of weakness that may put the university at a high risk for an information security breach and performs a complete review of security documentation.
Researches data processes and procedures, providing summary of analysis in the form of a recommendation to the responsible department with the intent of enhancing protection of information assets.
Writes technical and operational management documentation (solution proposals, system design and engineering documents, change proposals and internal process documentation).
Identifies and implements tools for managing spam, detecting compromises, and enforcing information security policies
Works with members of the information security team to develop and implement strategies that will enhance and enable effective and secure business practices.
Provides guidance and consultation for information security related questions from users, developers, and managers.
Interfaces with the user community to understand their information security needs; implements procedures that accommodate them but also ensure that users understand and adhere to necessary procedures to maintain information security.
Reviews the findings of security reviews and audits, and provides leadership and management status reports and recommendations to mitigate or eliminate potential risks.
Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or related field AND two years’ experience in information technology; OR Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Demonstrated knowledge of computer and network system architecture
Demonstrated knowledge of development of policy, procedures and technical standards
Demonstrated knowledge of security fundamentals in various operating systems and environments (e.g., network, applications, infrastructure, desktop)
Experience in interpersonal relations and teamwork
Experience with Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Outlook
Experience in communicating with all levels of employees within a diverse environment
Experience with information security tools such as firewalls, IDS/IPS, SIEM, vulnerability scanning/management, NAC
Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills
Evidence of security related certifications such as CISSP, SANS, CEH
Use PC and use hand/fingers for repetitive motion (keyboarding/typing)
Sit or stand for extended periods of time
Walk moderate distances to perform work
Communicate both orally and in writing, and read/interpret written and oral instructions/directions
May require lifting of items weighing up to 40 pounds
