Salary and Benefits
The salary range for this position is $4,372 to $9,683 a month. Starting salary placement depends on qualifications, experience and salary budget.
This position is eligible for a broad range of benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurances, retirement (CalPERS), tuition waiver, vacation and sick leave. In addition, 14 paid holidays are offered each year; 13 scheduled on specific days and a Personal Holiday that may be taken any time during the year.

Conditions of Employment
This is a full time, temporary, exempt position. Reappointment to this position is dependent upon the individual's performance as well as administrative and budgetary considerations. Appointment can be extended for a maximum of two additional years (total time served cannot exceed 36 months). The university reserves the right to terminate this appointment earlier than the scheduled expiration date.
Reporting to the Director of Academic Programs and taking work directions from the Director of Faculty Center, the Online & Hybrid Instructional Designer will support the development of online and hybrid courses, primarily those within the School of Extended & International Education (SEIE). Specifically, this position will provide support to the forthcoming Global Wine Executive MBA (GWEMBA) program being developed by SEIE in partnership with the School of Business and Economics (SBE), and others courses as appropriate. Additional duties involve supporting assigned faculty and programs wishing to develop online or hybrid courses, and collaborating with fellow instructional designers in the Faculty Center and with Information Technology staff to support online and hybrid course development for the campus, using officially supported platforms such as Moodle, Zoom, and Google Apps, and others technologies as appropriate. The Online & Hybrid Instructional Designer collaborates with instructors, subject matter experts and academic program administrators to plan, design, and develop courses, integrating multiple technologies to create custom, dynamic online & hybrid learning experiences.
The Director of Faculty Center will provide daily work assignments and direct supervision to this position, which will reside within the Faculty Center and the Division of Academic Affairs.
Major duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
? Supports faculty with all aspects and needs with regard to instructional design for courses
? Develops instructional and/or assessment techniques and applications using instructional technologies to enhance and facilitate program objectives and student learning outcomes
? Devises methods for integrating technical tools and applications into faculty instructional delivery and student projects
? Develops models and prototypes for research projects using appropriate applications, utilities, and product features
? Aids faculty in researching instructional methods using educational technology and online instructional materials
? Conducts need analysis and monitors progress during term for assigned courses and programs Works with assigned faculty members to create course shells for the upcoming course offerings
? Works with assigned faculty members and provides proactive optional technical review 30 days prior to course offerings to ensure course readiness, accessibility, usability, and compliance with other college/institution/federal/accreditation requirements
? Details course and program-level course design project requirements in work plan status reports
? Learns user functions, organization, and role in the campus environment to the extent required to apply appropriate technology to departmental or campus wide initiatives
? Fulfills department requirements in terms of work coverage and provides administrative notification during illness, vacation, and education absences
? Maintains excellent working relationships with all parties involved
? Plans the full range of actions needed to achieve desired end results of assigned work
? Meets course publishing deadlines per campus academic calendar
? Demonstrates initiative in the day-to-day work environment
? Displays creative approaches to normal work and special projects
? Identifies self-development needs
Primary Responsibilities - Extended Education Course Development:
? Works with faculty, independently planning meetings and work for assigned online/hybrid courses
? Collaborates with faculty and administrators in designing instructional materials & course templates
? Collaborates with faculty and administrators in designing course objectives, goals, activities and content, social aspects, communication, exams, and evaluations
? Collaborates with campus Subject Matter Experts in Information Technology and other departments as appropriate
? Assists faculty with periodic evaluation and assessment of courses
? Collaborates with faculty and administrators in providing recommendations for curriculum design based on best practices from quality programs (e.g., QOLT or QM)
? Collaborates with faculty to develop course material using requested and supported technologies (e.g., Camtasia, Zoom, TurnItIn)
? Coaches faculty during course development process on areas such as accessibility, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
Additional Responsibilities: Faculty Center
? Works as an integrated member of the Faculty Center team, attending required meetings and communicating with fellow instructional design staff and management.
? Consults with faculty in the adaptation of technology into courses, material, and activities
? Identifies and resolves problems in the use of applications, mobile devices, and desktop systems. Consults with faculty on the use of LMS, hardware, and software.
? Communicates problems and shares solutions with colleagues and customers
The incumbent will perform other secondary duties as assigned.
Duties take place primarily in an office setting located in the Faculty Center within the Schulz Information Center at Sonoma State University. As an exempt employee you have some flexibility in your schedule, however must be available during the regular campus hours Monday through Friday, as well as some evenings and weekends, to meet the operational needs of the campus and department. The incumbent must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such levels as is determined by the appropriate administrator. The position may require occasional travel, by automobile or airplane, and overnight stay to travel off campus to trainings and meetings.
This position requires a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in technical information systems and application program packages, which normally would be obtained through a bachelor's degree in education technology, communication, instructional design, curriculum and instruction; or related fields. Master's Degree is preferred. Two to three years of relevant experience developing custom courses preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience through educational projects, applicable certified coursework or internships is also considered meeting the minimum qualifications of this position.
This position requires working knowledge of instructional design theories and methodologies, pedagogical methods, and online/hybrid teaching strategies and the ability to apply them; experience in the development of quality online course content and appropriate uses of academic technologies, such as Moodle LMS and Zoom - virtual classroom software.
The position also requires general knowledge of Video Production from capture to editing, finalizing and making the content available to an audience. Additionally, the position will require creativity to work with both individual faculty and Academic Departments to develop unique solutions to their environments.
The incumbent must have working knowledge of academic program development and assessment. The incumbent is expected to help plan and develop appropriate assessment strategies for course and program level learning outcomes that accurately reflect student mastery of key concepts and to make recommendations on course level activities that can help with academic program review.
The incumbent should be familiar with academic technologies, such as: Moodle LMS (required 2-3 years of Moodle experience), Google Apps web conferencing, blogs, podcasting, wikis, surveys (Qualtrics), exams, and assignments; and knowledge and experience assisting faculty to ensure that instructional material complies with accessibility guidelines (Section 508, W3C); knowledge of and ability to evaluate instructional software, courseware development, and multimedia applications.
In addition, the incumbent must have excellent writing and communication skills; must have proven record of excellent customer service with attention to detail; and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team. Must have demonstrated ability to independently consult with users; to identify and document report purpose, workflow and process issues; to report output needs; and to determine report requirements and specifications, thereby developing practicable and thorough solutions using effective communication and listening skills. Must be able to adapt to change in the work environment, accept criticism and feedback, effectively handle multiple tasks and competing demands, work cooperatively in group situations and work actively to resolve conflicts; and work in a very stressful environment where constructive feedback from others is encouraged.
It is desirable to have knowledge of database sources and large-scale computing and information resource networks as well as the ability to provide light software development and programming support for instructional applications; and the ability to design, develop, and implement instructional applications.
