Utica College, a small comprehensive college in Upstate New York, is seeking a Systems Administrator who is responsible for providing system engineering and administration support for multiple servers running a variety of operating systems. Duties will include, but not be limited to: designing, installing, maintaining, and providing support for servers, integrating storage solutions (including SAN, virtual, and direct-attached), implementing and managing storage solutions, monitoring servers, responding to server or operational outages, analyzing issues and developing solutions, developing hardware and software configurations, and other application or server management functions.

Primary responsibilities include:
Performs system administration functions such as installation, patching, system monitoring, configuration, backup and recovery, and troubleshooting for multiple physical and virtual servers using a variety of operating systems in support of administrative and academic requirements; Assists in the management of physical and virtual storage solution technologies (ex SAN, NAS, virtual, and direct attached) and helps integrate these into the server environment; Works with IITS network personnel to coordinate the communicating and interfacing of systems with the campus network; Assists in the research, evaluation, selection, design and installation of new technologies as needed by the college including SAN, server and virtualization technologies; Provides support to faculty and students for specialized academic program labs, servers, or other specialized set ups; Performs technical aspects of project planning and implementation services for the rollout of new computing services; Anticipates and mitigates potential issues related to system perform which may adversely impact users; May be required to participate on various ad-hoc committees, and participate in various college wide activities and initiatives; Assists in setting security standards, processes, procedures, and policies and recommends appropriate changes to policies and procedures to meet new standards; Take an active role in the development of the department’s strategic and operational plans as required by department leadership. Works closely with department supervisor to develop and implement operational goals that support departmental success; Responsible for working with supervisor and other team members to achieve successful results on all established individual and department goals and key performance indicators; May perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field preferred; Minimum 3 years of progressive, relevant, hands-on system administration experience and experience with storage solutions also required; Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered; This position must have a valid driver’s license and be able to support off campus office; Must possess intermediate or advanced skills in Windows system administration; Must be willing to become proficient in system administration of other OSs such as Linux and Mac; Demonstrated ability to research, design, and implement new technologies; Demonstrated ability to provide documentation of how systems are built; Must be willing and able to work extended and/or flexible hours, including nights and weekends, on a project-by-project, or system-by-system basis; Knowledge of server applications such as AD, Terminal Services, SQL Server, IIS, Clustering, and Virtualization (VMware); Experience with VDI; Knowledge of one or more pertinent programming or OS scripting languages preferred; Knowledge and understanding of concepts and protocols such as TCP/IP, DNS, LDAP, and DCHP; Knowledge of configuring data connections such as ODBC to connect applications to databases; Application server configuration management such as IIS and apache; Excellent verbal and written communication skills a must; Ability to work in a team-centered environment and to hear constructive feedback from peers; Ability to work independently; Ability to implement servers independently, with minimal management intervention, and modify server configurations as needed; Excellent customer service and communication skills (both oral and written); Advanced analytical and problem solving skills; Must be able to manage time efficiently with minimal supervision; Ability to document configurations, procedures, and status reports for data center systems.
