The Director, Communications is responsible for developing and implementing communications strategies for the NYU community about NYU IT services, and for NYU IT staff (including organizational change management). The Director is responsible for managing a team to execute these strategies. The Director will: • Work with NYU IT leadership and IT leadership in NYU schools and units to shape and communicate key messages related to NYU's highest IT priorities and key initiatives • Work with NYU IT leadership to shape and communicate organizational change management • Work with the communications team to determine the most effective ways to deliver timely, relevant information and to the NYU community (faculty, staff, and students) to NYU IT staff. The Director will be responsible for developing innovative solutions for communicating with students, faculty, staff, and partners; creating communications that will be used on multiple platforms, requiring skills to research, write, and edit communications; manage and assess processes for optimal communications; and develop web content and presentations to support the organizational missions. The Director will employ project management skills to track deadlines and should be experienced in organizing both processes and people to ensure that the communications team remains efficient and productive while maintaining high standards. The Director should demonstrate the ability to use organizational communications to shape messages, create communication channels, develop strategic communication plans, and provide insights and information at both the strategic and tactical levels.
Required Education: Bachelor's degree
Preferred Education: Master's degree in English, Journalism, Public Relations and/or Communications or related field preferred
Required Experience: A minimum of 10 years of related experience in strategic and tactical communications. Must include experience with editorial production, website architecture and usability, budget and project management, and supervising staff. Must include experience in Change Management communications. This individual must be a highly motivated self-starter, who is comfortable collaborating as part of a team or working independently. Should have excellent customer service and organizational skills and be able to multitask. The director must possess excellent communication skills with evidence of successful leadership and administrative/supervisory experience; must be a thoroughly organized and goal oriented individual with the persistence and patience necessary to work effectively with a variety of internal and external constituencies. Essential to the position is the demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities and lead the team effort required to execute them.
Preferred Experience: Experience in a communications and/or academic environment. Experience with vendor management.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to write and edit publication material, build marketing plans and develop strategic plans. Supervisory experience essential. A familiarity with multiple technologies from desktop publishing software, to new and emerging web technologies and social media is required. Experience with using data to inform decision making is preferred.
