The Course Development and Training (CDT) unit within the Division of Extended Campus is seeking a Director. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, fixed term professional faculty position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Executive Director.
The director of Course Development and Training provides leadership and administrative management to the Course Development and Training (CDT) unit within the Division of Extended Campus. The division is a fast-growing, entrepreneurial organization with a commitment to providing access to Oregon State University’s programs of excellence that administers Oregon State Ecampus (online degrees), Open Oregon State (online resources), Extended Campus Research Unit (conducts original research), Summer Session (summer and intersession classes at OSU), OSU Office of Global Initiatives (OSU GO – study abroad) and Professional and Continuing Education. The CDT unit provides innovative and effective expertise and support for the development of online and hybrid courses, including instructional design services, multimedia development and faculty development programming and support. This position reports directly to the executive director of Course Development and Learning Innovation within the Division of Extended Campus.

The CDT director coordinates with other Extended Campus directors, as well as relevant OSU academic and administrative units, in the strategic planning and development of existing and new courses and programs offered in online and hybrid format. The director will act as the liaison to administrative and academic units in support of online and hybrid course development and teaching initiatives. The person in this position will create and implement instructional design, multimedia development, and faculty development standards and strategies, and provide advocacy for the online learner and for the support of faculty developing and teaching online and hybrid courses.
The director develops, implements and evaluates short and long term goals related to online and hybrid course development, including faculty development and training pertaining to online and hybrid course design and pedagogy. The director oversees and directs quality assurance in course design and faculty development initiatives and programming for academic faculty developing and teaching online and hybrid courses, as well as adoption and continued use of academic technologies used in online and hybrid courses.
The director oversees the production of Ecampus courses and open education multimedia content, as well as media development and production to support other units in the division. The director also initiates and directs special programs and contracts related to distance/online course development and training services.
50% – CDT Leadership and Administration Provides clear and innovative leadership for a large, diverse Ecampus Course Development and Training unit. Facilitates the development and delivery of online and hybrid courses, including instructional design services, multimedia development, and faculty development, training, and support.
Continually evaluates effectiveness of instructional design, multimedia development, and faculty development, training, and support services and refines processes to meet needs of faculty and students.
Oversees online and hybrid course development and production.
Oversees quality assurance initiatives, such as Quality Matters, including the development of implementation plans, establish goals for the program, creating a selection process for course reviews, managing communications to academic departments about quality assurance initiatives, and establishing and managing the training and review aspects of quality assurance initiatives.
Assists personnel with advocacy and problem-solving for faculty and students.
Provides leadership for personnel in the research-based development, management, assessment and continuous improvement of strategies and approaches to support Ecampus course, multimedia, and faculty development, training and support.
Provides leadership and decision-making for Ecampus on website development of course development and training content.
Evaluates new tools and technologies to support development and delivery of online and hybrid courses and makes recommendation on adoption.
In coordination with the assistant directors in CDT, provides management and/or supervision for the CDT unit. This position plans, assigns and approves work; responds to grievances; hires/fires; prepares and signs performance evaluations/reviews of employees. Identifies and supports professional development opportunities and coordinates participation.
25% – Communications with OSU and external partners and audiences Acts as the Ecampus liaison on instructional design, multimedia development, and faculty development, training, and support initiatives with academic units and other units within OSU, as well as with external organizations and consortia. The director serves as an advocate for distance/online students, and faculty developing and teaching online and hybrid courses.
Coordinates with university academic units to assess course development and training needs and to make determination of adequate support for the development and delivery of online and hybrid courses.
Communicates with university academic units the quality standards and processes for online and hybrid course development, multimedia development, and faculty development, training and support.
Communicates in writing, conference presentations, through participation in meetings and summits regarding online and hybrid course development, instructional design, multimedia development, and faculty development, training and support.
10% – Strategic Planning and Reporting Develops and implements procedures to determine CDT unit needs that align with the goals in support of the Extended Campus and OSU Strategic Plans. Assures that operational systems, educational technologies, and processes are in place for maximum, data informed effectiveness of course development and training efforts. Reports on course development and training related production and initiatives.
10% – Ecampus Cross-Team Collaboration Collaborates with other Extended Campus units to achieve division goals, including new course and program proposal assessment and intake, award nominations and other forms of recognition, research activities, multimedia production, division communications and event planning.
5% – Service and Professional Development Provides service to both the unit and university by working on departmental, division, university, regional and national committees and projects. Represents and attends relevant workshops, conferences and meetings, presenting and sharing knowledge and expertise and networking with colleagues.
Engages in ongoing professional development to stay current on subject matter expertise. Shares knowledge with the Extended Campus team and networks with colleagues.
Contributes to equity, inclusion and diversity as part of assigned duties and/or service.
Master’s Degree in Education, Communications, Business Administration, or a related field.
Demonstrated excellence in written, electronic/digital, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, especially in communicating persuasively and clearly with other professional colleagues.
Strong leadership and organizational skills with demonstrated competencies in making complex decisions; delegating effectively; and building strong relationships.
Demonstrated experience in applying (or training faculty to apply) best practices in instructional design for online and/or hybrid education through a complete course/program development cycle (roughly equivalent to three years’ experience).
Demonstrated experience in evaluating, using, and supporting others in the use of educational technologies.
Demonstrated success with project management, especially in a high-volume, fast-paced work environment.
Understanding of a higher education academic environment and the ability to work with faculty, staff and other departments throughout the institution.
Demonstrated experience successfully participating in, building and leading effective and diverse work teams that includes providing direct leadership and supervision.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
