Work with a group of highly motivated individuals to plan, design, install, and operate an always-on network for the faculty, staff, and students of Oakland University. The network team is responsible for all of Oakland University’s cable plant, network hardware, and telephony infrastructure, including switches, routers, firewalls, load balancers, wireless infrastructure, phone systems, voicemail, and call distribution systems. We work with equipment primarily from Cisco in addition to vendors such as Aruba, Juniper, Palo Alto, among others. Join an experienced network team in this exciting opportunity to gain advanced experience as a network engineer. Requires network analysis, user consultation, diagnostic skills, and problem-solving skills. Uses networking knowledge to help design and install network configurations. Tests and evaluates network systems to eliminate problems and make improvements.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Network Communications, Networking, Telecommunications, or closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Five or more years of network engineering experience in wired, wireless, or voice enterprise network environments. Demonstrated experience with a variety of networking concepts, practices, and procedures. Experience configuring routers, switches, computers, and wireless access points for successful network operations in a Cisco environment. Ability to work in UNIX command line environment. Familiarity with the support of DNS, DNSSEC, and DHCP. Knowledge of design, maintenance, and troubleshooting for data and voice communications and network systems. Ability to contribute to group projects and work collaboratively as a member of a strong technical team. Ability to perform light lifting as appropriate for network hardware installations and maintenance. Willingness to be flexible in work schedules, including willingness to occasionally work between 3 AM and 5 AM on Wednesday mornings for the maintenance window. Ability to travel for off-campus locations, education, or conferences. Strong problem-solving, organizational and analytical skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with others.
