This position works directly with the Assistant Director of Infrastructure Services Engineering, and related teams, in several key areas:
Enterprise Network Architecture – The Principal Network Architect will work with the network engineers, security engineers and Division of Information technology (DIT) stakeholders to develop the overall backbone architecture. This includes the enterprise network, network infrastructure and services and related network security systems.
Research and Development – The Principal Network Architect will investigate new technologies and provide technical direction to DIT regarding networking and related services. The Principal Network Architect will ensure that centralized processes are designed based upon customer requirements, including best practice references, next generation designs, use of automation and application delivery controllers.
Strategy and Standards – The Principal Network Architect will develop and distribute guiding principles, standards and best practices for enterprise networking and related services at the University of Maryland. The IT Architect will play a key role within the DIT organizations by performing as the technical expert for enterprise network and related services, and collaborating with other architects and technical experts to develop the vision and strategy for the organization, as well as identifying and resolving complex issues.
As a Principal Network Architect, you will oversee and technically direct system wide issues that require advanced levels of understanding of network and telecommunications theory and the specific enterprise network architecture? establish overall strategic network standards and priorities? and provide direction and technical guidance in the design and implementation of networking solutions.
The Principal Network Architect will analyze the optimization of network system performance? will oversee the strategic interface of network systems configuration? will analyze the use (incorporating broad technical knowledge) of the diverse business areas within the enterprise in the assessment of network engineering technologies, and calculate systems hardware and software protocols.
The Principal Network Architect will provide high level technical advice and guidance to managers and technical resources on which network technologies can be utilized to meet current and future organizational needs.
This position provides overall design, development and support for the network infrastructure. This may involve entire life cycle management and support of network entities such as routers and switches, traffic shapers, VPN systems, firewalls, IPS systems, load balancers, VoIP gear, wireless infrastructure, and video services.
This position also involves planning, designing, and implementing network infrastructure projects. The Principal Network Architect should be able to work both independently and as part of a team. Project management skills are desirable, and the Principal Network Architect is expected to be the project manager/lead on a portion of the department’s projects. This includes meeting with the stakeholders, gathering requirements, pulling in resources within the team and outside in order to coordinate their efforts, create and present designs, oversee the implementation of the project and handoff support to the Operations Organization.
Documentation is a critical component of this position. Design documents will contain diagrams, purpose statements, stakeholder requirements, test plans, required personnel and hardware resources, costs estimates and schedules.
Requires a Bachelor Degree, preferably in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related field.
At least ten (10) years of very large scale network (WAN/LAN/WLAN) engineering, deployment and support.
Must have significant experience (5+ years) as a Network Architect or Lead Engineer working on large scale, mission critical (i.e. ISP/Internet/eCommerce/ASP/Web hosting) networks.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Advanced knowledge of the following technical areas: routing, switching, wireless, multicast, VOIP, QoS, network management principles, firewalls, VPNs, network security principles, network capacity planning and management.
In depth technical knowledge of network services (Firewalls, VPNs, content networking), network technologies (Ethernet, Wireless, Sonet) and layer1 technologies (twisted pair, fiber, coax, RF).
Ability to design 50,000 user enterprise networks in all networking and telecommunications areas.
In depth technical knowledge of protocols and standards, such as: TCP/IP, 802.1x, OSPF, BGP, SNMP, DNS, DHCP, IPAM and NTP.
Translate technical information into formats for a variety of internal or external audiences not well versed in the details of the technology and have the ability to translate complex network topics into business level meaning and terms.
Act as an expert in diagnosing and solving complex problems and providing detailed technical analysis.
Possess excellent interpersonal, consultative, coaching, communication, and negotiation skills including excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to explain networking and security concepts to a diverse stakeholder base.
A Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology or a related discipline is highly desired.
Experience in a large scale higher education environment is preferred, but not required. Prior experience as a Network Architect and networking certifications, such as CCIE, are preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of Cisco and Palo Alto networks are preferred.
Superb technical knowledge of network systems, protocols, and standards such as Ethernet, LAN, WAN, TCP/IP, 802.1x, SIP, H.323, MPLS, VXLAN, LISP, EIGRP, BGP, IGP, OSPF, HSRP, IPSEC, DNS, DHCP, NTP, and 802.11.
Technical knowledge of network management and analysis tools such as SNMP probes and Network Sniffers or similar devices or programs.
Knowledge of administration, installation, configuration, upgrading, and troubleshooting experience with:
Server Operating Systems, including: Windows, UNIX (Linux/FreeBSD).
Databases (SQL and/or Oracle).
Programming languages and techniques (Perl, Python, PHP, C/C++, Java), web based application development, relational database application development, and user interface design.
Identify problems in the enterprise network infrastructure and propose solutions.
Design, implement and support distribution networks, wireless networks and data center network infrastructure.
Design, implement and support network security services.
Integrate disparate systems.
Identify functions that can be improved by process development and implementation.
Meet with customers and obtain specific requirements.
Work independently, as well as within a team environment.
Prepare purchase requisitions, and SOWs with executive summaries and backup documentation.
Willingness to participate in professional training programs and conduct presentations.
Willingness to perform public speaking and present personal ideas in group sessions and market solutions.
Willingness to perform other duties as assigned.
Prior experience as a Network Architect and networking certifications, such as CCIE, are preferred.
Experience in a higher education environment is preferred, but not required.
