The Computational Scientist works as part of the High Performance Computing (HPC) Group to help Mines researchers by collaborating with other researchers and computational scientists to develop, integrate, port and tune applications to take advantage of the high performance computing capabilities at Mines.
The primary duty of the Computational Scientist is to assist Mines HPC users in using HPC resources effectively and efficiently by participating in developing, porting and scaling applications and algorithms; debugging and tuning applications for high performance; scheduling applications at scale to meet the scientific needs of the users; and collaborating with other Mines/HPC staff to ensure that user needs are met.
Other duties include participating in domain science and computer science research proposals, forging collaborations with researchers on topics of mutual interest and working with Mines systems, storage and networking groups to understand the needs and schedules of the application groups.
A Master's degree in computational sciences, physics, applied mathematics, computer science or a related scientific discipline. Significant, relevant experience and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for the Master's degree.
Experience with numerical methods, parallel algorithms, MPI, a common scientific computing programming language (i.e. Fortran, C, and/or C++)
Experience with parallel software development on large-scale computational resources
Ability to work in a dynamic, team environment
Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, and strong personal motivation
A Ph.D. with subsequent relevant experience
Experience with one or more prominent simulation codes (e.g. NWCHEM, ANSYS Fluent, GAMESS, Quantum Espresso, GROMACS, AMBER, VASP)
Experience in one or more major areas of science domains aligned with Mines' mission areas (Earth, Energy, Environment)
Experience with multiple common scientific computing programming languages
Experience with general purpose graphics processing units (GPGPUs), vectorization, developing and debugging massively parallel algorithms, and code performance profiling
Computing, Communications, and Information Technologies (CCIT) provides information technology services and support to meet the instructional, administrative, and research needs of the Colorado School of Mines. CCIT manages and operates central academic and administrative technology infrastructure and systems including learning technologies, enterprise systems, business and administrative systems, as well as servers, storage and the voice/data networking infrastructure. CCIT also provides research support services including three High Performance Computing platforms. In addition to providing key infrastructure and technology platforms, services provided to the campus community include email, wired and wireless network operation and support, phone services, server and network security, volume and site licensing of software, videoconferencing, online student services, and support for Mines learning management system (Canvas). CCIT's Client Services and Support Team, which includes the Technology Support Center, provides customer-focused technical assistance and support through a centralized Help Desk.
