Duties & Responsibilities Harvard Kennedy School is launching a new program initiative that will offer online courses for mid-career professionals. This program will expand the reach of HKS knowledge, ideas, skills and practices into the world and enable working professionals to become better equipped to advance the public good as leaders. As part of this work, we are looking for a creative, solutions-oriented team player to fill the role of instructional technologist.
The instructional technologist will be part of a matrix team in the academic dean's office consisting of designers and technologists who work closely with faculty and other HKS administrators and staff. This team's primary focus is on designing, developing, and delivering a series of online courses and an online capstone experience.
This position is fully benefits eligible term appointment for two years with a strong likelihood of renewal for the next two years.
Work closely with faculty, teaching teams, learning designers, fellow technologists, producers, outsourcers, and project manager to develop new online courses for adult learners in the policy, leadership, and public administration domain, including definition of course learning objectives.
Administer core platform (Canvas LMS).
Research and test tools to extend functionality of core platform based on program and course requirements.
Integrate third-party and custom-created tools into core platform via LTI and APIs.
Train others on how to use platform and tools.
Provide technical support to the matrix team and coordinate technical support between learners and outside vendor.
For third-party tools, negotiate contract terms with vendors, and liaise between vendor, HKS IT, and Harvard legal team as appropriate.
Engage with other technology colleagues at HKS, other Harvard schools, Harvard central units (e.g., HUIT, HarvardX), and peer institutions.
Coordinate, oversee, and at times participate in quality assurance (QA) testing of courses and tools.
Compile statistical reports and other metrics.
Monitor and communicate with project manager about goals, schedules, and deliverables.
Participate in and when appropriate lead team meetings.
Minimum of three years related professional experience
Experience working with faculty in a college/university setting
Blended, online, and/ or massive open online course (MOOC) learning knowledge and experience
Experience with use of learning management systems (ideally, Canvas), web / video conferencing software (e.g., Zoom); multimedia and video production a plus
Must be able to research, test, assess, learn, and train on new technologies quickly in response to pedagogical needs
Possess understanding of and appreciation for multiple dimensions (e.g., security, data dependencies, user experience) that must be considered when evaluating potential technical solutions
Experience with learning analytics, including data-driven visual storytelling skills (and experience with design tools and data visualization tools like Tableau), a plus
Teaching, training, and / or instructional design background a plus
Ability to work with limited supervision in a fast-paced, ever-changing team environment
Strong written and verbal communication skills, presentation skills, and project management skills
Other responsibilities as assigned
