The Network Engineer provides advanced engineering and support services to the campus data network environment. This position will work in a small team environment within Central IT, but will have significant interaction with other University Departments to address their network needs and issues.
This position is required to be on call for emergency situations requiring emergency resolution.
Provide advanced engineering and support services to the campus data network environment in an environment consisting of network switches, routers, wireless (802.11), DataCenters, OSPF, BGP, DNS, DHCP, VPN, logging, and NAC technology solutions.
Develop, implement and maintain departmental policies, standards, and procedures for the data network environment.
Provide detailed project planning, technical network design, network diagrams and detailed network documentation supporting SMU data network infrastructure initiatives.
Liaise with and provide training and support to help desk, network, security and other campus departments on network issues.
Provide advanced diagnosis and resolution of network system (hardware and software) problems.
Perform advanced configuration of routers, switches (layer 2 & 3), and other network devices.
Perform evaluation of new network technologies and provide vendor recommendations.
Interact and negotiate with vendors, outsourcers and contractors for product evaluations, technical implementation planning, and procuring data networking-specific products and services.
Other relevant job duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
A Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years of work experience with complex network environments OR a high school diploma, or equivalent, with a minimum of seven years of experience with complex network environments is required.
If applicable, degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience is strongly preferred.
Experience with LAN, wireless tech, switch/router configuration, network diagnostic tools, IP Address management, OSPF, DNS, DHCP, NAC is also required. CCNP preferred or equivalent work experience preferred. Aruba, Cisco and HP certifications are a plus.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of networking protocols, TCP/IP
Cable plant design and management experience

Candidate must demonstrate strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Must also demonstrate strong written communications skills. The ability to explain technically complicated concepts to both technical and non-technical customers in appropriate terms is essential.

Candidate must possess strong organizational and time management skills to effectively prioritize and manage multiple tasks. A strong focus on attention to detail is essential.
Candidate must possess strong project management skills including planning, documenting, completing and supervising assignments for larger projects. Strong leadership skills with the ability to lead a technical team are essential.
Candidate must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision and also collaboratively within a team-environment. A commitment to embrace new technologies and the ability to be flexible and adapt quickly to changing priorities/requirements (even mid-project implementation) are essential.
